Introduction

Guwahati is a major city in eastern India, often considered as the gateway to the North-East Region (NER) of the country and is the largest city within the region. Situated beside the immpressively wide and muddy Brahamputra River. Once known as Pragjyotishpura (the Eastern City of Light) and mentioned in Mahabharta, it has long been the most important town in the region. It's now the service centre for the oil industry and tea plantations; the world's largest tea auctions are held here. Guwahati is pleasant, relaxed place. There are numerous anacient Hindu temples in and around the town, but its main importance is as the gateway to the whole of the north-eastern region. The name (Guwahati) is a combination of two words: "Guwa" meaning areca nut and "Hat" meaning market. Guwahati is the commercial nerve centre of the North-East. The places to shop for handicrafts and handloom items include the State Government's department store, Pragjyotika at Ambari as well as several private shops in Pan Bazar and Fancy Bazar, two of the main commercial markets .

How to get there

  1. Air :-Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport of Guwahati is well connected by air with New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Indian Air Lines, Sahara And Jet Airways operate regular flights to Guwahati.
  2. Rail:-The busy and overcrowded Paltan Bazar railway station is the nearest railhead for many trains from every part of India.
  3. Road:-Guwahati is the connector city of NH - 31, 37 and 40 with the other cities of India by road. Guwahati can also be reached through road transport from the West Bengal side. From Guwahati, regular bus services are available to most places of Assam and the north-eastern region.
